R.I.P. George Romero (1940-2017)
The world has lost a visionary today. Not only a pioneer of the zombie movie but a pioneer of representation and social commentary in film. FAR ahead of his time on race and gender issues. Take a look at some of the reactions from notable people of color on Twitter:

George Romero made a film where the levelheaded Black hero survives zombies only to be killed by scared whites. Almost unfathomable in 1968.— Saladin Ahmed (@saladinahmed) July 17, 2017
Never forgotten my awe at seeing NotLD - a black actor! Open acknowledgement of race/gender politics! That made it scarier.— N. K. Jemisin (@nkjemisin) July 16, 2017
As well as other notables:
Romero used genre to confront racism 50 years ago. He always had diverse casts, with Duane Jones as the heroic star of NOTLD.— Eli Roth (@eliroth) July 16, 2017
George Romero was a great director, the father of modern horror movies. He was my friend and I will miss him. Rest in peace, George.— John Carpenter (@TheHorrorMaster) July 16, 2017
Romero has passed away. Hard to find words right now. The loss is so enormous.— Guillermo del Toro (@RealGDT) July 16, 2017
